Loading...Musicians have been growing ever more popular on Youtube, one of the most famous of these is the a cappella group Pentatonix from which I’ve already featured one video. The band consists of 5 members, Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, along with bass Avi Kaplan and beatboxer Kevin Olusola. And as it turns out Kevin Olusola isn’t just a beatboxer; he can play the cello, too.
And really well, which he displays more on his channel, Kevin K.O. Olusola. He often posts covers and other songs on his channel, and my current favorite of his is his great cover of Stay With Me, by Sam Smith. In his video, he brilliantly blends his beatboxing along with cello and accompanying my a pianist. Using a looping tool, Kevin creates the illusion of backup players and post editing, when really he is just using the looping tool to add and take away looping tracks.
And seriously, I never knew a cello player could sound so amazing. I always though of cellos as just a background instrument in a concert band. Props to Kevin for making an otherwise duller instrument awesome.
(also, I definitely think he hit Sam Smith’s voice pretty spot on – it almost sounded as if Sam Smith was singing through the cello!)
