No doubt one of the most iconic characters in television history, Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, will go down in history as one of the defining characters of sci-fi movies, tv and just the whole sci-fi genre in general. Sadly, Nimoy recently passed away, leaving behind a whole generation of fans who grew up watching him on screen. The calm, logical and overall brilliant character brought to life by the late Leonard Nimoy has been embed deep into 20th and 21st century culture, going hand in hand (no pun intended) with the also iconic Vulcan salute:

Everyone knows the salute, but as Nimoy points out that many people don’t even know that the gesture is used to bless someone, not greet them. And seriously, where did they even get the idea for such a gesture? Many people can’t even do the salute, as it is such an odd shape to make with your fingers. The answer is actually quite surprising, and happens to be a suggestion of Nimoy’s. I won’t tell you the answer just yet, as Nimoy no doubt explain it better than I will in the featured video previously conducted interview above by the New York Times.
