Today is Pi Day, everyone! In case you don’t know, today is more than just Pi day, 3/14, but also 3/14/15, a once in a century event that matches Pi down to 5 decimal places. This is awesome, by itself, but as many have mentioned, that means that for one really really tiny moment of time, the time matched Pi for an infinite amount of digits. (if you don’t count that after a certain number of magnitudes you can’t slide time anymore, but whatever)

Anyhow, this has brought a lot of excitement upon the Internet, and I’m sure many math enthusiasts everywhere even bought pies and ate them to commemorate the day. That’s great and all, appreciatingĀ math, but as Vi Hart points out in this video, Pi itself is a random number, and it doesn’t even match our calendar, which is a totally different base than Pi, which is base 10. (like the rest of our number system)

At least, after spoiling Pi Day, Vi HartĀ proposes a new holiday, which makes a bit more sense that Pi Day, which as she points out, it arbitrary in every way. I won’t tell you what it is, but once you find out, I think we should all petition to make it a national holiday!

Happy Pi Day, even though it doesn’t really mean anything.
