Mathematics is a discipline that many might describe as emotionless. Not in the sense that mathematicians can’t feel emotions, but in the sense that you don’t necessarily have to be an emotional or empathetical person to do it, unlike “emotional” disciplines such as writing or poetry. Well, in a ironic twist of fate, some mathematicians devised a way to have math describe something typically considered very emotional: marriage, in particular, couples fighting.

In this great Numberphile video, featuring Hannah Fry, Hannah tells us about an equation created by a couple researchers on relationships, and if they can predict if a couple will end up divorcing after only watching them discuss and often fight about the most contentious topic between them. Using some artificial scales that the scientists created on how bad every thing the couples said to each other, they were able to predict a couple’s marriage outcome with a 90% accuracy.

Pretty amazing, that with a simple equation, the scientists could not only determine the probability that the woman’s next words will be positive or negative, but also the outcome of their entire marriage. That’s what math can do for you if you use your imagination!
