If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’re one of the 1.5 billion Facebook users or even one of the 400 million Instagram users. While we think of these sites/apps as simple social media platforms, they are really much more than that; they are our modern, advanced way of doing something that we’ve been doing for thousands of years: recording ourselves. We may just be posting pictures of our pets or lamenting about your lousy day at work, but what we’re really doing is creating a remarkably complete record of your life, something that was significantly much harder hundreds of years ago.

In this interesting video by Vsauce2, Kevin takes us on a brief trip through the history of recording ourselves. Since we have all the needed technology to record ourselves at our fingertips these days because of our smartphones, we often think of recording ourselves as easy. But recording ourselves is an activity we’ve been doing all the way back to the Sumerians and the Egyptians, from the Greeks to renaissance artists, and it wasn’t always so mainstream. The video above will not only tell you all about how people recorded themselves all throughout history, but also perhaps give you a great appreciation for your Instagram posts and Facebook status updates.
