We all know that cats always land on their feet. Whether dropped from 20 feet, the top of a building, or a couple meters above ground, cats always manage to right themselves in mid-air and land without injury. It’s really quite amazing to watch; the agility required to pull off such a hard trick without fail throughout a whole species is pretty astonishing. But how do cats perform this trick in the first place?

Luckily for us, Smarter Every Day is here to show us exactly how cats land on their feet, and in slow motion as well. By dropping a couple cats from head height, and filming it with a super slow motion camera, Destin is able to figure out exactly how the cat flips in mid-air, and as it turns out, it’s more complicated than you might think. (no cats were harmed in the making of the video, the cat in the video is a trained stunt cat) Altogether, the video is very interesting and informative, showing us through unique slow motion footage exactly how cats pull off the seemingly impossible feat.
