So it’s no wonder that the following fact astounds me: in a group of 44 people, there’s a 93% chance that two of those people share a birthday. Well, it did astound me. That was, of course, before I watched the video above, a great educational video by It’s Okay To Be Smart. In the video, Joe talks all about the math behind why that fact is so, and the reason it seems so strange to us.
As it turns out, the reason we feel that the fact above is so odd is that we almost never meet another person with the same birthday. But the fact clearly states that there is a 93% chance any two people in the group would share a birthday. That drastically increases the odds, and as Joe explains in the video, makes the situation a lot more interesting.
