There’s a lot of travel videos out there on YouTube, from travel vlogs to documentaries to simply short films featuring a certain city or country, and I’ve seen quite a lot of them over the years. But I have to say, the video above and the series it’s in is perhaps my favorite, at the very least one of my favorite, travel videos on all of YouTube. The series is called Snapshots by Will Darbyshire, the video above being most recent video in that series, NYC Snapshots.
Taking place in New York City, the video does a great job of not only capturing the city and its people but also in creating a very artistic, captivating film. The whole Snapshot series differentiates itself from other travel videos in that it uses a certain style that Will Darbyshire created that gives the video a choppy, old film style feel to it. I learned at a panel at VidCon last year that he does that by taking a bunch of pictures, on a normal camera, in rapid succession and then editing them one after another, but even though it isn’t even normal video the effect feels very similar to old-style film. While sometimes I feel with most modern video the idea of a great, artistic short film is lost on most videos, but this video captures that in a great way. It’s hard to explain, but you’ll have to watch it for yourself to see what I mean. The video not only is a great travel video about New York City, but also a great work of art.
