Stormtroopers, the innumerable soldiers of the Galactic Empire, have become a part of popular culture since their introduction in 1977. Dressed in white and black armor, the soldiers are a great example of what are called “mooks”; a character in a movie or TV show that is only shown on screen for a couple seconds, and usually only because it is getting killed by the main characters. Stormtroopers particularly embodied this “mook” archetype during the original trilogy, in which scenes where Han Solo singlehandedly chasing away 5-10 stormtroopers are plentiful. As we all look back in retrospect at the original trilogy, we all have come to the same question about the stormtroopers: “Why are they such bad shots?” Not only are they mooks, but they are terribly inefficiant mooks, and as Mike Rugnetta says in the video above, “they can’t seem to hit the side of a barn with their blaster rifles.”

By PBS Idea Channel, today’s featured video explores many different fan theories that try to explain why stormtroopers are such terrible shots. Not only is the video entertaining, especially for Star Wars fans such as myself, but it is also very interesting, as the theories open up the Star Wars universe in a way I never would’ve thought to look at it.
