It’s widely known that, despite the success the movies had and the brilliance George Lucas put into the first three movies (4,5,&6), the three prequel made by LucasFilms for the Star Wars franchise in 1999, 2002, and 2005 missed the high bar set by the previous movies by a large margin. In the making of the newest Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, the ghost of the prequels haunted director J.J. Abrams and the rest of the Disney team, not wanting to mess up their chance to revive the franchise as Disney does so well. There are plenty of reasons the prequels went wrong, one popular example of the terrible decision making in the film is the infamous character Jar Jar Binks. An annoying, overly-silly, and simply badly designed character, Jar Jar definitely stood out as one of the worst character in all 7 movies so far.

But despite the rest of the film and following two films featuring plenty of what many would call mistakes, Mike Rugnetta from PBS Idea Channel tells us all about the fan theory in the video above that details how, rather than a mistake, Jar Jar Binks was a calculated and cunning character choice. Rather than a clumbsy annoying Gungan, Jar Jar is actually… a Sith Lord in disguise. I know, it sounds crazy, but after watching the video above, I half want to believe it’s true myself.
