Since the dawn of the film industry many, many years ago, anyone remotely interested in seeking a career in the medium had one path to take: go to film school, get a degree, get a job from there. And that’s worked out perfectly fine, many great filmmakers and other people working in film sprouting from that process. But with the development and subsequent popularity of the Internet and online video, any online filmmakers looking to get into film without having to spend so much time going to film school are in some ways out of luck. Fortunately for any budding filmmakers, or simply anyone interested in film, RocketJump Film School is a channel that can help you learn things you would traditionally learn in film school in an interesting and fun way.

RocketJump is a YouTube channel, started by Freddie Wong in 2006, that has grown from a group of friends making videos into a full-on modern film studio that makes short films regularly for their over 7 million subscribers. RocketJump has grown to hire a plethora of talented individuals to help with many aspects of making films, from sound design to costume-making to writing. And so, last year, RocketJump created RocketJump Film School to help less experienced filmmakers learn more about the industry, how to make short films, and more.

To highlight just one of their great videos on the subject of filmmaking, above is a video that RocketJump Film School made, narrated by Freddie Wong himself, on why people nowadays think CG (computer graphics) suck. You may have heard people complaining about how bad computer graphics have gotten, and how if only filmmakers would use “practical effects” more, meaning instead of animating something blowing up actually filming it a life-size model blow up, films would be much better.

In the video, Freddie argues that actually, what people who make such arguments despise so much is bad CG, not CG in general. Most CG you never even see in modern films, and the extent of what’s completely CG can sometimes be pretty astonishing. Not only is the video very interesting, teaching those of us who are interested in film more about the industry, but it also can be enjoyed by those who aren’t interested in filmmaking at all, and simply enjoy watching movies. And while not all the videos on RocketJump Film School are like that, some being more specific and teaching-centric towards would-be film students, plenty can also be enjoyed by just about anyone.

All in all, RocketJump Film School is a great resource for anyone trying to make it either on YouTube or in the film industry, making helpful and easy-to-understand content regularly. While film school has been the way to grown your name in film for many decades now, RocketJump Film School may very well be part of a wave of new filmmakers disrupting the current film landscape, not to mention providing interesting and fun content for all of us to watch (for free, unlike traditional film school).
