Back in the mid-1910s, as World War I started to get worse and worse, both sides began to take more drastic measures to get ahead of one another. One such measure was taken by both the Italians and their opposing Austro-Hungarian Empire: the Iron Road. In the Italian Dolomite Mountains, both the Austro-Hungarians and the Italians ended up setting up complete ad hoc bases, complete with bunkers, tunnels, and more. The war had progressed to a point where even the mountains had to be fought over, and fought over they were.

The “Iron Road” is the name given to the fascinating series of metal rods and anchors drilled into the Dolomite Mountains to help the Italians and Austro-Hungarians in getting men, equipment, and even sometimes animals up the incredible steep and rocky cliff-sides. In this great video by Atlas Obsucra you’ll learn all about the Iron Road, what it was used for, and how you can even visit it today.
