I’ve called Mike Rugnetta, the creator behind PBS Idea Channel, somewhat of a “resident philosopher” of YouTube. His videos dive into, well, philosophical subjects like no other channel, and Mike is an outstandingly sophisticated, well-spoken, and simply interesting guy. In the video above, Mike dives into a subject not many would dare to enter, and one that philosophers have dabbled with for centuries: death, in particular, mourning. Mike made the video in response to what’s been called the “grief police”, a group of people complaining about the expression of grief online for the recent celebrity deaths such as David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Robin Williams, and more.

Mike argues the side of the young generation, the generation using social media as a tool to express their grief, for celebrities as well as family and friends. I won’t say anything more, as I feel Mike has crafted this video in a way that explains his reasoning and logic better than I ever could. But I can say that, whatever your opinions before watching this video, if you even had any on the topic, you will be persuaded to see it from the other party’s point of view.
