As of today, there are more than 2,000 man-made satellites orbiting the Earth right now. Whether providing GPS or conducting experiments about the effects of micro-gravity, satellites more common in Earth’s orbit than you might think. As shown in the movie Gravity, two things orbiting Earth colliding does not end well for anyone. This begs the question: how likely are they to collide, and how can we prevent the collision and or the negative effects of such collisions? While preventing collisions is also something the makers of satellites take into account, it’s inevitable that collisions will happen at some point.

And when they do, the debris that is left behind continues in their own mini-orbit, not only a danger to the International Space Station but also for the other important satellites in orbit. In the interesting video above, The Daily Conversation talks about how we might solve the space debris problem, and one effort to solve the problem in particular.
