Today’s featured video, titled “Intelligent Design“, is Crash Course’s 11th installment in their Philosophy series, and the third one on the topic of the existence of a God or gods. I featured the first video in three-part discussion a couple weeks ago, and I decided to feature this one today because it’s such a great explanation of one of the most popular arguments for the existence of a god, as well as an explanation of its many counterarguments. It is important that we have this discussion about religion; after all, more then 70% of Americans identify as Christian, so it’s important to see the reasoning and counterargument behind that decision and what is often a life-long commitment to that faith.

In the video, Hank Green talks about the Teleological Argument, Thomas Aquinas’s 5th argument for the existence of a god, more commonly known as the Watchmaker Argument or Watchmaker Analogy. The Watchmaker Analogy compares the complexity to the world around us to a watch, and through that connection tries to prove God’s existence. While the argument has been debated against many a time over the years, it’s still a key argument in the philosophical arsenal for the existence of God and should be analysed by theists, deists, atheists, and agnostics alike.
