I think we can all agree that black holes are some of the most interesting and intrinsically awesome parts of astrophysics and even science in general. They refuse to operate in any realm that humans can possibly imagine; it’s hard enough to imagine a mass 4.5 million times the mass of our own sun, let alone a mass that is inescapable by even light. They’re fascinating, as we now know pretty common, and a staple of modern science. Now let’s take this one step further. Could you possibly make a black hole… out of light?

That seems like it would be obviously impossible, but in fact, scientists say that, theoretically, it could be possible. In the great video above by SciShow Space, Hank Green talks about the hypothetical “Kugelblitz”, or light black hole. By simply manipulating our current understanding of light and black holes, we can work out that there is a possibility of Kugelblitzes existing, although at a certain point our knowledge of the universe breaks down. But, if Kugelblitzes could be created, then I’m sure we would have reached the biggest oxymoron discovered by science ever.
