If you’ve been following the news recently, you’ll know that nation of Turkey has been going through some politically turbulent times recently. Less than a week ago, a coup was staged in the country, an effort led by the military to dispose of their current leader, the far right-wing authoritarian president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The coup was unsuccessful, leading to around 200 dead and many military personnel involved to be arrested. It’s a complicated situation, especially because of Turkey’s history of successful military-led coups.

The video above, made by Vox, explains exactly what went down in Turkey, why the coup failed, and what the aftermath will look like. After all, Turkey isn’t a small or unimportant nation; it borders Syria, which makes it a prime spot for headquarters for the US’ and other nation’s efforts against ISIS, it has been taking in millions of Syrian refugees, it’s population is the 19th largest in the world, and it may be joining the EU sometime in the future. Luckily for us, we have the video above by Vox to help make clear of yet more unstable times in the west-Asian/eastern European region of the world.
