Over the last couple decades, many arguments have been made for why it’s statistically probable that life elsewhere in the universe exists. I won’t go over that now, as I’ve featured many videos explaining why it’s likely. The conversation, in the last couple years, has shifted from whether or not aliens exist to how we might go about contacting them and if we should even be contacting them in the first place.

Somewhat characteristically, we jumped the gun a little bit back in 1977, when a team of scientists led by Carl Sagan created a vinyl record that was supposed to represent humanity as a whole (as well as give aliens directions to Earth) and launched it into space on a probe headed straight into deep space. While it seems like a fun thing to do, leading scientists like Stephen Hawking are now wondering; how great of a decision was that? The great video above, made by TED-Ed, talks all about that question, whether or not we should look for like elsewhere in the universe, in an interesting, well-animated, and insightful way.
