All (or most) music has rhythm, some sort of pulse that the drives the song forward or simply keeps time for the rest of the band. While it doesn’t contribute to the melody, the drum kit is (arguably) the most important instrument in any given band. If you take away the drums in a song it will sound completely different and feel incomplete, but if you take away any other instrument, provided that the instrument in question doesn’t singlehandedly play the melody, the song won’t sound too different.
