For many reasons, artificial intelligence poses a plethora of challenges to our current idea of consciousness, personhood, and more. As it exists right now, AI is limited to predicting your next word, helping with scientific models, and beating humans in board games like Chess and Go. But, as many science-fiction writers have already explored in depth, there will be a time, perhaps in the near future, where we have “strong” AI with human-level complex thinking and behaviors. When we get to that point, we will have to answer many questions, not the least being “can an AI be considered human?”.

The video above, made by Crash Course as part of their fantastic philosophy series, tries to answer some of those questions. By talking about the opinions of influential philosophers throughout recent history, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the situation with AI is, and can from there form your own opinion.
