Let’s be honest; pianos and cellos, while very versatile instruments, are most well known for their classical music, and in piano’s case, ballads as well. Both of these types of music have been very well received over the years, hence their popularity, but sometimes it’s refreshing to hear the instruments used for other types of music. The Piano Guys, a musical duo consisting of a piano player and a cellist, Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson, use their instruments to play a wide variety of types of music, like pop, funk, and more.

And not only do they use their talents in piano and cello to play interesting music of all types, but the end result is always stunningly great. Take, for example, the video above, titled “Jackson 5 and Bach were funky way before Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk!”, which shows what would happen when if the 1770’s would collide with the 1970s. Although only a dramatization, as classical pianists and cellists from the 1700s didn’t actually time travel to the 1970s, in case you weren’t sure, the video is very entertaining, and shows my point above very well. Not only does the harpsichord, grand piano, modern cello, and classical acoustic cello all sound great together, but they all somehow make the mix of classical music and the Jackson 5 hit I Want You Back sound astonishingly good.

In case you’re not convinced, here is another example of a great video by The Piano Guys. Since the Holiday season is pretty much upon us, I’ve picked TPG’s second most viewed video ever with 47 million views, a mashup of Vivaldi’s Winter and the hit song from the movie Frozen, Let It Go. Shot in an incredible, winter-wonderland-like location, the video and the music featured in it are both equally great and fun to listen to. You can watch the video HERE.

Altogether, The Piano Guys are as much of a great YouTube channel as they are a great and innovative music group. As I said at the start of this article, The Piano Guys are experts at experimenting in the types of music they play and making it always sound like that’s the way the song, or sometimes songs, were always meant to be played. Jon and Steven are both very talented musicians, and that shows through their entertaining videos.
