These days, penmanship is thought of as a past art form of the yee old medieval times. Cursive is barely even taught in schools, although a basic level of handwriting is required and taught. But penmanship? Back when religious monks living in monasteries in the hills of Europe were actually a large group, penmanship was essential in copying books and other texts, and they often made exquisite books and scrolls. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the ability to write well lost a real use, as not many of us need it. As long as you can read your handwriting, you’re good. Penmanship is a dwindling art form.

What we need to keep the artform up and running is young, talented people interested in penmanship, and Jake Weidmann is exactly that person. Jake is the youngest master penman in the world, and that’s saying something, as there are only 12 master penman in the world. In this great video by UPROXX, you will learn all about Jake and his journey through the small, but strong, world of penmanship, and what it takes to become a master.
