Let’s be honest: we all want “The Force”, the mystical force used by Jedis in the Star Wars universe, to be a real thing. Sadly, that is not the case (at least as far as we know with current technology, but we can safely assume it doesn’t exist). Physics simply doesn’t allow for some “energy field that surrounds us and penetrates us”, as Obi-Wan Kenobi put it, especially one that can be controlled such as the Force. So even though we won’t be force-pushing anyone or lifting x-wing fighters anytime soon using the Force, it’s still interesting to think about the real science behind the Force, why it can’t exist, and what it would take for something like it to exist.

To get that information, Brady Haran of Sixty Symbols went to Professor Phil Moriarty, who answered all those questions in depth, using complex physics such as quantum entanglement to try to make sense of the enigmatic “energy field”.
