We all know that squirrels save their food for later by burying it in the ground. It’s just something that squirrels do, as well as other forest animals such as a variety of birds and other rodents. But something we don’t usually think about is how exactly squirrels remember where they buried their food. Squirrels are usually thought of as not the smartest of creatures, so then how do they possibly remember where they bury their food in areas as large as whole swaths of a forest? Well, in this video, Joe Hansen of It’s Okay To Be Smart talks about that exact question, and how studies have proven that squirrels may not be as dumb as we previously thought.

For instance, squirrels and some birds have been observed remembering which buried food pile is theirs versus those dug by other squirrels, and even avoiding thieves using trickery and other methods. This interesting and entertaining video makes the case that, despite seeming to be not the smartest, squirrels may have some qualities that we previously thought only humans and other primates were capable of.
