We’ve all heard of the placebo effect, and maybe think we know how it works. Essentially, the placebo effect occurs when I tell you that completing a certain action, most commonly taking a pill, will have certain effects. (such as making you feel better) Even if the action really has no effects, because you think it has effects, you will feel like the supposed effects actually happened. For the pill example, even if the pill doesn’t do anything, giving it to you and telling you it’ll help you feel better will actually help you feel better even though the pill doesn’t do anything. It’s a strange phenomenon, and certainly one that deserves more research in.

In this video by It’s Okay To Be Smart, Joe tells us all about how the placebo effect is used in the medical industry, and how it’s even used to test the legitimacy of off-the-counter drugs. Altogether, the video is very interesting, well explained, and teaches you information that will hopefully help avoid being tricked by any placebos that you ever incounter.
