The title of today’s featured video, despite its simplicity, is actually quite hard to answer: what is something? The question is deceptively simple, as although we know something when we see it, it’s much harder to make a definition for anything that is something. Plus, if we had an area of space that was free of any radiation, particles, etc, would that be nothing? How could space possibly be just nothing, even if has nothing in it? Is space something?

Alright, alright. I’m getting a little metaphysical here, but this is the basis of the video above by Kurzgesagt, who aim to answer my questions by diving into the physics behind what we call “something”. From quarks to electron fields, the video pretty much explains the basis of the standard model of particle physics, all the while keeping the explanation in terms of our “something” thought experiment. With great animation and interesting content, the video does a great job of explaining particle physics, which is a hard thing to do, as well as making a fascinating and entertaining video.
